Having its beginnings in the popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, the blockchain technology has been attracting increasing attention of researchers and practitioners working in fields as diverse as smart cities, wearable technology, environmental issues, surveillance systems, and energy grids, among others. The potential of blockchain to provide security solutions for many of these increasingly vulnerable systems is non-negligible. However, blockchain with its current limitations will not be the right answer for all of our security problems. This talk will give a quick introduction to the underpinning basics of the blockchain technology, discuss its merits and limitations for different security problems, summarize the latest developments in the blockchain world and suggest venues for improving this technology, which is expected to dominate the field of cybersecurity in the next decade.
